In the first interview since his reported suicide attempt, Owen Wilson appears in a myspace video that was set-up, edited, and produced by director Wes Anderson. The video was put together by the pair to discuss India and Wilson’s role in The Darjeeling Limited.
There are many weird and disturbing things about this interview. Where to start? Well, for a five minute video that was made for no officially stated purpose, why did Wilson spend most of the time talking about monkeys? And for a video made for no officially stated purpose why did Anderson end the video by saying “we’re out of time,” without shooting the thing all over again since all Wilson did was talk about monkeys?
Here’s how it went down:
"Didn't you get trapped by some of the monkeys once?" Anderson asks Wilson.
"Yes, I did. At first you think 'gosh, monkeys ... that's so incredible. It's going to be so great to see them up close'. But you start to feel a little bit that ... not competitive with the monkeys ... but that they didn't have your best interests at heart...They weren't these adorable little creatures. They want to replace you."
Wes Anderson does not appear to look like a man on drugs, so I can only assume this video was an attempt to reach out to Wilson. Yes, he was reaching out like a cuddly sensitive friend-monkey. My only question is if Owen Wilson were replaced by a monkey would Bottle Rocket still be my favorite movie? And would Kate Hudson or Jessica Simpson notice the difference? Uhm, I think – yes, sure, and nah, nah.
