Nicole Kidman’s Film Failures

Nicole Kidman is the wild dandelion of Hollywood films. Pretty to look at, wispy and wistful, but hard to get rid of. While we hoped her new hubby, Down Under country crooner Keith Urban (anyone else find an Aussie Hank Williams-type odd?), might monopolize her time, particularly given his frequent bouts with drugs and lengthy rehab stays, it doesn’t seem to be the case. It feels like the former Mrs. Tom Cruse (anyone find this marital choice odd?) is in a movie a month, and most of them, at least lately, clunkers (Bewitched, The Interpreter, The Stepford Wives, The Invasion....). Which is why today’s Page Six mentions another potential bomb—The Golden Compass, featuring the Moulin Rouge star. The film is being put out by New Line Cinema, which, as mentioned in the article, hasn’t had a hit since the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Says an insider about Golden Compass, “people working on the movie say it is just plain bad.” If this film does indeed tank at the box office, might Tinseltown execs finally uproot her long-held clinch on big-ticket roles? If so, then perhaps gratefully, Nic will wilt into that Sunset Boulevard called the Lifetime Channel.
